Just about anyone would love to receive a free vacation, but sometimes when a free vacation offer pops up it turns out to be a scam. Vacations frauds will drain you of your money without coming through with the vacation that was promised. Last minute vacations, cheap vacations and other vacation packages are all good ways to get away at a great price, but if you get a call or piece of mail offering a free vacation, you’d better proceed with caution.

If you’ve entered a sweepstakes or some other contest where a vacation was the prize, your offer may be legitimate, but it’s wise to watch for some telltale signs of a vacation scam.

Quite often, when a vacation scam call comes in, the person on the other end of the line will talk fast and you’ll barely be able to get in a word. A vacation scam will usually tell you that you have to pay a certain amount for taxes or some other fee, but the vacation itself is free. If it is truly a prize of a free vacation, it should be free of all charges. The dangerous part comes in when they ask for your credit card number or other financial information to hold the vacation for you. Sometimes, they’ll use the last minute vacations concept, telling you that you have to act quickly because time is limited. High pressure tactics are usually a part of a vacation scam.

Ask a lot of questions when you receive these types of calls to help ascertain if the vacation is real or not. Just remember to not give any financial information under any circumstances and you’ll only be out some time if it is in fact a scam. Some common vacation scams include paying fees to reserve your spot, getting free plane tickets but having to pay for everything else yourself, free vacations to bad hotels, becoming a travel agent to get cheap vacations and phony vacation discount cards. Everyone loves the thought of cheap vacations, which makes some of the common vacation scams seem very attractive. Hearing that you can have free last minute vacations or lifelong cheap vacations is enough for many people to lose their common sense.

The best way to find legitimate cheap vacations and other vacation packages is to seek them out yourself. All inclusive vacations and last minute vacations are usually available to a host of different destinations if you take the time to look. Call a reputable travel agent and ask about cheap vacations or discount cards if you want to get away for a good price. Be suspicious of anyone calling you out of the blue and offering any type of vacation for free. Go along with the offer as long as you don’t have to give any potentially damaging information, but end the call as soon as you do. Just as with most things, vacation packages and cheap vacations that seem too good to be true, usually are.

It’s true that last minute vacations have their share of rules and regulations to follow, but the deals you can find if you’re willing to follow them are very attractive. When you are planning vacation packages, it’s always wise to ask a handful of pertinent questions before you sign up and take off. Vacation deals and cheap vacations are great, but if you don’t have all the details covered ahead of time, your trip could turn into a disaster.

Insurance is always an important factor for vacation packages, whether you take cheap vacations or expensive ones. Look through the pages of your vacation package or ask your travel agent what types of insurance you should purchase, if any. The type and amount you need will vary, depending on where you’re going and for how long. The last thing you’d ever want is to be on vacation and get sick or hurt and not have the insurance to cover your treatment.

It’s also a good idea to find out the cancellation policy of vacation packages before you book. Obviously, last minute vacations aren’t going to have any type of cancellation policy, but for regular vacation packages and other vacation deals, there should be one in place. Things happen in life, and they don’t always seem to care that you have a vacation planned. If you have to cancel for any reason, it’s nice to know the terms upfront. It’s always wise to ask how your credit card will be charged while you’re on vacation. Of course, the vacation package itself will be charged, but some items at the resort and other incidentals may also end up on your credit card statement. If you typically run the balance close to the limit, it’s especially important that you ask, so everything will fit on the card while you’re gone. If you are into all-inclusive vacation packages, you’ll want to ask which activities are included and which aren’t. Aside from your room, food and drinks, some vacation packages include a range of activities at no extra cost.

Whatever type of vacation deals or cheap vacations you sign up for, just be sure to ask as many questions ahead of time. At the very least, you’ll want to know what types of mishaps you are insured for, and what exactly is included in your vacation package. If you want vacation deals where absolutely everything is included, ask about it and find the package that’s right for you. If you’re into last minute vacations, ask about how they work and all of the extras you can get for booking at the last minute. If you ask the right questions, you’ll usually find exactly what you’re after.
